Austin AECOM is providing Design-Build services for the renovation of a child care facility to be used as an elementary school for the UNO Charter School Network (UNO). The new facility will consist of 43,150-sq-ft of adaptively reused renovated space. The renovated, fire-resistant structure with masonry exterior walls consists of a three and one-half story building with a habitable dormered attic space. The three-story elementary school is configured around a single-loaded central corridor occurring along one exterior wall and accessing a row of classrooms along the other exterior wall to achieve a maximum use of natural daylight.
The school will incorporate 18 classrooms, each designated for 29 students. A flexible classroom to accommodate various special activities is centrally located in the building and accessed from the main corridor. The second floor library/media room, accessed from the main corridor circulation, is located in the center of the building. Other common areas include a third floor, roof-top playground, central ground floor kitchen and servery, vertical exit stairs/elevator circulation, toilets, storage and mechanical space.
UNO administrative school functions are located in the dormered attic space and include 16 office spaces. The facility also includes a first floor reception and administrative suite.
The building has two main street entrances separated into an office entrance and the primary school entrance. The facility is located on approximately one acre and the site development includes paving, landscaping, and staff and visitor parking spaces. |
