The first major enzyme production plant in the United States was built for Novo Nordisk Biochem Inc., the American subsidiary of the Danish company Novo Nordisk A/S. The initial phase of construction was completed in 1979. Since then, Austin AECOM has been engaged virtually continuously in design and construction at the Franklinton site. Capacity of the plant is now three times that of the original operating facility.

Enzyme Manufact. Facility – Project #1
16,000-sq-ft greenfield facility designed in the manufacture of enzymes. Process included raw materials storage and prep, large fermenters and process piping, process controls, filtration and product storage. Utilities design included process air, plant steam and potable water, cooling tower water, chilled water, instrument air and electrical. The site included a packing area and administration offices.

Project #2
Expansion of existing facility to triple fermentation capacity. Process utilities were also expanded to accommodate new production capacity.

Project #3
48,000-sq-ft greenfield production facility housing large fermenters, mix tanks, diverter panels, storage tanks, sucrose tank and anti-foam tanks. To accommodate new process capacity, a 12,000-sq-ft central utilities plant was included to house boilers, compressors, a motor control center and maintenance area. Project included a 3,000-sq-ft pilot plant.

All process equipment was of sanitary design and constructed from 316L stainless steel. All process piping was of sanitary design, consisting of orbital welded stainless tubing with 20 Ra interior finish.

Utilities included process filtered air, instrument air, ammonia, equipment cooling water, chilled water and potable water. Also, plant steam, clean steam and condensate return. Tank farm included storage tanks of various sizes ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 gallons of raw materials, intermediate and final product.
