Abbott Laboratories selected Austin AECOM to design the renovation of a facility purchased to house Abbott Molecular Diagnostics and another Abbott subsidiary, Vysis. Both divisions work in molecular diagnostics, and the potential synergies created by combining the two divisions into one was expected to outweigh the investment in the facility renovation.
The office and miscellaneous support areas in the 186,000-sq-ft existing facility remained much as they were. The areas that house manufacturing, R&D and quality control were renovated extensively. Renovations included replacing air handling, duct and major electrical systems; adding lab process utilities and waste systems; and providing architectural and structural upgrades to create an efficient flow of product, people, and supplies.
Some areas are cGMP compliant, while others have characteristics of clean rooms to class 10,000.
The new central plant designed by Austin AECOM consists of three 200-h.p. boilers, two 400-ton chillers, a 1000-kW emergency generator, and a 20-gpm reverse osmosis system for USP purified water. |
