Austin AECOM provides technical services for FEMA’s Public Assistance division through AECOM’s national contract with the Department of Homeland Security.
The objective of the FEMA Public Assistance (PA) Grant Program is to provide assistance to State, Tribal and local governments, and certain types of Private Nonprofit organizations so that communities can quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President.
Through the PA Program, FEMA provides supplemental Federal disaster grant assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned facilities and the facilities of certain Private Non-Profit organizations. The PA Program also encourages protection of these damaged facilities from future events by providing assistance for hazard mitigation measures during the recovery process.
During the Hurricane Katrina recovery, AECOM sent hundreds of staff members to the gulf region to provide damage assessments and to assist with the PA program administration.
Austin AECOM’s architects and engineers were part of FEMA’s Educational Facilities Team in Louisiana. The Educational Facilities Team worked with every affected K-12 school and university that was eligible for disaster relief funds.
Tasks included:
- Helping applicants understand the PA program and the types of disaster relief available to them
- Providing damage assessments and cost estimates for the disbursement of federal funds
- Assisting with the planning and procurement of temporary facilities during the recovery process
