Austin AECOM provided design-build services for the expansion of United Cargo’s largest hub. Austin AECOM designed the fully automated, state-of-the-art Mail and ULD Handling System, which will also house the northern end of SLAC storage and retrieval system with the new GSE and Line Maintenance.

The Mail System design utilizes a high-speed tilt-tray loop that provides dynamic, flight-specific sortation and the ULD Handling System incorporates two transfer vehicles to provide effective and reliable transfer and storage of containers between airside and landside. The system also integrates the build-up and breakdown operations.

The facility project consisted of the renovation of the existing 300,000-sq-ft building and a 150,000-sq-ft expansion to house the Mail Annex. The renovation portion of the project required Austin AECOM to replace 232,000-sq-ft of structural elevated slab in the existing building while allowing the facility to remain in operation around the clock. Austin AECOM used a forming technique similar to that used in bridge construction to replace the slab in 60,000-sq-ft sections at six-week intervals. The forming was done below the existing slab before demolition to provide a working surface for reconstruction of the floor and tenant areas.

Civil engineering services included paving, grading and utilities for the addition.
