The Tribune Company, parent company for the organization's media and publishing interests, sought to diversify and expand their business operations to maintain competitive market share. To permit greater synergy between the organization's various business lines and leverage support service functions between all groups, it was decided that a consolidation of operations was required. Austin AECOM was retained to develop a masterplan and restack of their existing office space in the Tribune Tower, a registered historic landmark building.

Austin AECOM developed new furniture and design standards to support the organizational shift to a more team-oriented, collaborative work style required by the growing diversity of their business portfolio. Preservation of the building's historical architectural vocabulary while integrating state-of-the-art technology to support a vast array of presentation and multi-media functions was a critical component of the interior architectural design solution.

In order to establish long range growth requirements, the Chicago Tribune developed a comprehensive master plan that incorporated both the Freedom Center and the Tribune Tower properties.  With over 1,200,000-sq-ft of office and production space required, a detailed space program and phased master plan were ultimately developed.  Austin AECOM was responsible for all programming and planning activities.
