Austin AECOM’s Tom Serruto Promoted to Technical Leader/Director of Laboratory Design

CHICAGO (April 3, 2007) – With more than 23 years of architectural experience, concentrating in the highly-specialized area of life sciences, Tom Serruto’s promotion to Technical Leader/ Director of Laboratory Design for Austin AECOM is a natural fit. Holding both a Master of Architecture and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Design, Serruto is a licensed architect and a LEED-accredited professional.
In his new dual role, he is responsible for programming, planning, and building design to meet complex laboratory research requirements, while providing expert code analysis and technical leadership. Serruto has also developed a niche with complex – and potentially volatile – process building programs, requiring a thorough understanding of building, fire, mechanical, and electrical codes, as well as process engineering. Serruto is also dedicated to mentoring young architects, working to raise their awareness of the importance of stringent code analysis in the design process.
Since joining the firm in 2001, Serruto was instrumental in securing and executing key projects for private sector clients, including Aldrich Chemical, Hospira, Ferro Pfanstiehl, Pfizer, Abbott, Sunrider, and 3M. His public sector work includes institutional laboratory experience with projects and master plans for the Illinois Department of Health; United States Environmental Protection Agency; Illinois State Police Forensic Science Center; Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source; and, the Technological Institute reconstruction for Northwestern University.
“My entire career is dedicated to developing solutions for complex research laboratory projects. And, being a design-builder, Austin AECOM provides a project delivery method that is a rarity in the research laboratory world,” Serruto explains. “My job is professionally rewarding, because the work performed in the facilities we design and build makes major contributions to the world.”
